Kibale National Park in Uganda is an amazing center of biodiversity. It is home to the densest population of primates in Africa, is classified as an important bird area and contains over 250 species of butterflies and countless other endemic and endangered species. Tragically, Kibale’s trees are quickly being cut down for use as firewood. Most of the forest fragments outside of the national park have now disappeared, placing intense pressure on protected areas.
The Kibale Community Fuel Wood Project aims to protect Kibale’s natural forests while strengthening the people-park relationship by helping villagers meet their needs in sustainable ways. The project promotes and facilitates the use of home-grown wood and fuel efficient stoves, and has an educational outreach program, which includes science museums and traveling movie shows.
The Kibale Eco-Char Initiative provides an environmentally sound alternative to charcoal by creating “eco-briquettes” out of waste products.
